My Reading Life

I am so fond of books that even going to a bookstore makes me feel great, even though I am just browsing and not buying books.Yeah,if I actually buy a book or more,I will feel over the moon. Having said that,I am a picky reader, and if a book doesn't grab my interest within first few chapters,I abandon it to read another one.

My favorites genres are YA, fantasy, sci-fi, mystery and contemporary

I Am Number Four (Lorien Legacies, Book 1)

I Am Number Four - Pittacus Lore After watching the movie trailer and reading some reviews,I decided to give this book a try and it turned out to be better than I'd expected. It just felt to me that romance was dominating in some parts, don't get me wrong,I'm not againt romance,I just felt it was sometimes redundant and also they fell in love so unconditionally that was sort of unbelievable for me.Aside from this aspect,in my opinion, romance made the book somehow slow-paced in the middle.
I didn't understand why Mark changed and became so kind and helpful all of a sudden, because of his dogs.It was a bit odd for me!!
All in all,if the book was a bit shorter and action was all through the book,I would like it more!

Heist Society

Heist Society - Ally Carter At last, I made it. I liked it,but it took me a long time to finish it. Maybe because I love the audiobook, and if I'd read the book,I would have finished it sooner. It's about 6 hours long, all just in one file, and every time I got distracted and started to read something else.
I really enjoyed listening to the audiobook. It was read by one narrator,it wasn't felt though, she had unique voices for different characters. So,I listened to it from the beginning every time!
It was the first long audiobook,I've ever listened to,so it was kind of difficult for me,too.

The Book of Lost Things

The Book of Lost Things - John Connolly David's mother passes away and after a while his father remarries a woman who gives birth to a son. David loves reading and fills his lonliness by reading.Once in the middle of a night he hears his mother's voice claiming that she is alive and needs to be saved.Following the voice,David enters a world very different from his own. Will he be able to find his mother? Will he be able return to his world?

I like the book, however, toward the end, I sort of grew to not like it any more. It wasn't my typical type of fairy tale or young adult. Some parts were gruesome ,creepy and sometimes really annoying. The part about the huntress really put me off and I had hard time reading it. Maybe the problem was that I'd expected to read a fairy tale. I think the author hates fairy tales ,and that's why he decided to screw them up like this!

The Catcher in the Rye

The Catcher in the Rye - J.D. Salinger I was sort of depressed when I started reading this book, but this book depressed the hell out of me,I don't mean I didn't like it,but I couldn't stand it any longer!
Now,I want something spirit lifting to read!

The ABC Murders: A BBC Full-Cast Radio Drama

The ABC Murders: A BBC Full-Cast Radio Drama - Philip Jackson, John Moffatt, Simon Williams, Agatha Christie I didn't mean to listen to the radio dramatization of this book.I didn't even know there IS a radio dramatization of it.By pure chance or in other words,by mistake I downloaded it, supposing that it is the unabridged audio-book , it turned out to be a BBC radio drama. I love it,I listened to it three times, still it was as interesting. Now,I have about eight of them! I mean BBC radio dramas!
SPOILER ALERT!

The Adoration of Jenna Fox

The Adoration of Jenna Fox - Mary E. Pearson Jenna's parents had two choices ahead, to keep her alive or let her die. They made a choice any parents in the world would have made. How Jenna will react when she understand the truth about herself. Will she accept her new self?!

Truth to be told,I have mixed feelings about genetic engineering, what I'm trying to say is I can't decide how far it should go.If I were in Jenna's parents' shoes,I would definitely do the same thing, however,I think it's kind of playing God,isn't it? I'm in two minds really!!

The ending took me by surprise . No way did I expect a happy ending. Unexpected it was , however, it made the book more lovely in my eyes, since I'm a fan of happy endings! And I gave it an extra star, just for the sake of this unexpected ending!

Matilda

Matilda - Roald Dahl, Quentin Blake I enjoyed reading and listening to this book immensely. It plunged me back to my childhood,I felt as if I am a child again reading a book appropriate for my age.
At first, I listened to the audiobook which has a wonderful reader, so I listened to some chapters twice or more. Later, I found out that it was abridged,so I read the book, too.
I love Matilda.

December 10th,2011
I just listened to BBC dramatization of this book, what can I say?? I am just speechless,it is fantastic! Even better than the movie,or the normal audiobook.
Lenny Hennry, the narrator did a great job,I don't know what to say,the way it was dramatized, just made it way more interesting! All the cast were wonderful!

I still love Matilda! After one year!

Thirteen Reasons Why

Thirteen Reasons Why - Jay Asher Hannah Baker was new to a town and also a high school freshman when so many things went horribly wrong and led to her suicide. After her suicide, one of her classmates, Clay Jensen, received a package by mail in which he found seven audiotapes narrated by Hannah. In these tapes,Hannah explained 13 reasons why she'd decided to end her life and those who received these tapes are one of those reasons. Clay listened to the tapes while wandering around the town and waiting to know what part he'd played in Hannah's suicide.
Although,it was known that Hannah was dead, somehow I wished it was all a joke, and waiting for her to show up!
The dual narration made me confused ,especially in the beginning, but I got used to it the more,I read.
I gave it 3 stars, because the subject matter was depressing, and in some parts, sex was too much for my tolerance. And,I didn't like much the ending. Despite all these, I like it, in some parts,I couldn't put it down and wanted to know Clay's part in Hannah's decision.
........
After one year! 11/11/11 !!!!!
I decided to give it a 4 star rating!
I really I liked it,even now after one year I'm still thinking about it,I didn't like Hannah or Clay much, but the book on the whole,I think, deserves more than 3 stars!!

Once a Witch

Once a Witch - Carolyn MacCullough Despite the fact that she was born to be one of the most powerful in her family,Tamsin isn't even considered as normal.Everyone in her family has a talent which manifests itself at the age of 8,however,in Tamsin case,at the age of 17,nothing has been manifested.
She wants to prove herself to her family, that she isn't a failure. So,when a stranger comes and asks her to find a family heirloom for him,as if to grab a chance, she accepts. She doesn't have the faintest idea that meeting that man will turn her life upside down, that some dark secrets will be revealed, that those important to her will be in danger.
It started off slowly for me,but the more I read the better it became. However,in my view the action picked up a bit late as I said earlier.I haven't read many books about witches,I think it is a good one, though.
And,I enjoyed the mystery in this book which had me one edge of my seat.In addition, the amount of romance in this book wasn't that considerable, and that was what I wanted,I mean I wanted to read a witchy book, not a romance!

The Bad Beginning

The Bad Beginning - Lemony Snicket Well,I have mixed feelings about this book. However,it's a children book after all. So,I'm trying not to be too harsh with it.Yes,I decided to give it 4 stars .

I appreciate the black humor and overall, narrator's voice.Although all the time he was promising bad events.Somehow I found his voice funny.

I will definitely check out the next books in the series.

Unwind

Unwind - Neal Shusterman It was really an awesome read.I love the multiple storyline.Up to the middle I was hooked, but the I got a bit bored, and abandoned it to read some other books, but when I restarted.Again,I love it.
Have you ever thought about becoming an organ donor?
Well,in this book some of teenagers from 13 to 18 are forced to become one.But wait! Not after their death! This process is called unwinding.
Set in far future, Unwind is about some kids who are supposed to get unwound, but run away for dear life.If they managed to survive up to 18,they'd be safe.

It's an engaging book in dystopian genre which reminds me of The Giver,Hunger Games and Uglies. However,as the first book in a series,it was much darker and more terrifying.

Reading part 6 was really a challenge. It was spine-chilling.I needed several breaks to go through it.Still,I had to force myself to keep reading. At the end,I wanted to cry!

SPOILER ALERT!

Mockingjay

Mockingjay - Suzanne Collins So depressing and dark, but realistic.

Real or not real?

REAL!

I’m a bit depressed by the ending and even the whole book.Anyway, despite every thing ,this book exceeded all my expectations ,maybe because I had set them so low!!And I enjoy reading it.It wasn't quite as good as "The Hunger Games," but better than "Catching Fire."
A lot of characters died in this installment. However, the character's death which bugged me the most is definitely Prim's. I was on verge of tears.Poor her! I wanted her alive and also I wanted her to be a doctor. And also Finnick' death.Finnick and Annie reminds me of Lupin and Tonks in some ways.
And I'm a bit depressed that Katniss ended up with Peeta.I feel,Gale was only a tool to make the story more engaging to follow. He didn't try much to win Katniss's heart. Maybe, that's for the better and he'll find a better person, who knows?!

I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You

I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You - Ally Carter The main reason I've first decided to read this book was definitely the title. It's kind of funny and catchy.I also liked the cover. The next step was the blurb of the book which was not that bad, sort of corny.
And,I didn't expect much of it. However,It was a great fun to read it.It's funny and entertaining. And the romance is a clean one! I found myself smiling a dozen times.Still I'm not so sure how to rate it.I decided to give 4 stars, given the fact that I read it only in two days and really enjoyed reading it.

A Kiss in Time

A Kiss in Time - Alex Flinn Jack's parents send him on a tour of Europe, but he ends up in a lost kingdom and kisses a sleeping princess,Talia. After pricking her finger on a spindle, Talia sleeps for three hundred years due to a curse placed upon her at birth by an evil witch. After kissing the princess and waking her, Jack's life is turned upside down. Now, the princess wants to run away with him!

After reading Beastly and loving it, I was determined to read more books by Alex Flinn. So, I started to read "A Kiss in Time" , it didn't let me down, however, it wasn't as good as Beastly. Now, I'm really looking forward to reading Alex Flinn's next retelling ,"cloaked".

The story is told from the viewpoints of Talia and Jack . Again,it's a modern retelling of a classic fairy tale, this time,Sleeping Beauty.

Two different point of views have its own pros and cons for me,at first ,it was a bit confusing, I mean after reading one chapter narrated by Talia and getting used to her tone, next chapter was narrated by Jack. But, as I read more , I found it less confusing, and even great. Because I could understand them both better.

The Lightning Thief

The Lightning Thief - Rick Riordan To begin with, I'd like to say,I really wanted to like this book, But I couldn't. I had high expectations of this book, since almost all of the fantasy fans like this book and even compare it with Harry Potter. That’s why I’ve been meaning to read it for ages. Of course, there are lots of similarities, but this book has a long way to go to reach the quality of Harry Potter. I’m so disappointed now, I couldn’t get into this book as much as I expect to. Everything seemed unoriginal and forced to, in my opinion. While I was reading it, I couldn’t believe it is the same book I’ve seen lots of good reviews on. I just didn’t understand, I thought maybe something is wrong with me. I just wanted to find reasons why I don’t like it, but at last I decided that not everyone can like the same book! I didn’t want to finish it, but I forced myself somehow to finish at least the first book, I’d thought maybe reading it completely would change my mind, but it didn’t. In the first place, I wanted to rate it 3 stars, even though I didn’t like it as much as expected, I enjoyed some parts, such as: the whole mythology stuff ,or the parts when Percy went to Olympus. But two stars is not that bad, it means it was OK, yes I think it was OK.

I liked the beginning that was nice. It encouraged me to keep on reading. But the problem was the more I read, the less my interest became. The amount of action was unbelievable. Predictability was another problem, whenever they visited a new person or place, they got themselves into trouble and something went wrong. I think that’s because it is written for younger audience. I really enjoy reading YA, but this one was my type, I suppose.

Percy is so unbelievable. He could defeat his teacher and vaporize her. Even, He could defeat a god, the god of war. How could he do it? I didn’t like him. I think there was not enough character development in his part; I mean even heroes are not at first that perfect, and they experience some defeats at first. Even heroes need some training and gradually they become a hero. What qualities does Percy have to make him an innate hero? I don’t get it. Another problem was his dreams which were REALLY on my nerve, why would he be able to have those dreams; I mean he doesn’t have a scar or something, does he? Why when he thought his mother died just in front of his eyes, he didn’t even shed a tear? And, I didn’t understand why his mother had to put up with a guy she didn’t like. To protect his son? I don’t get it. And, she just could dump him, why did she turn him into a statue and sell him? And, His mission was really something. I mean we have gods here. What kind of gods are they? They are so useless. I don’t care much about the other characters, as well.

And I think this book borrows A LOT from Harry Potter which is unbearable for me, such as:

1. Percy’s dreams
2. His companions are a girl and a boy
3. Kronos instead of Voldomort
4. Invisibility cloak which I didn’t get why the hell that girl had one. Maybe just for the sake of resemblance to Harry Potter!
5. Half-Blood camp instead of Howgarts.

There are some other similarities, but I think these are the main ones.

Maybe, I’m too harsh with this book. But that’s the way I feel about it. I read some other books which weren’t that great, but I rate them higher. I think I’m really a bit harsh with this book. But, I think in case of other books, at least I cared about the main characters, but in the case of this one I didn’t care about any of the characters. I just want to find more reasons why I didn’t like it much, but I think that’s enough for now. If I come up with some other stuff, I’ll add them later!!

Beastly

Beastly - Alex Flinn A modern retelling of Beauty and the Beast from Beast's perspective.

I truly like it.It feels strange, but I already miss reading it.Reading it in less than two days is kind of record for me.I like the references to Jane Eyre,Hunchback and other books. The chatroom parts were sort of interesting and new for me.
Although I like the book,in the first place I couldn't like the main character,Kyle. He was a dirty guy who deserved what he got. However, after a while I started to not hate him,and I just tolerate him.
I have one complaint, though.I know this book is YA, But it seems to me it is a bit soon to find true love at 15. It's just an idea any way.
I have some other complaints, but I just ignore them ,because I enjoy reading this book.
